Want to learn how to make tallow skincare — but don't know where to start? I put everything I wish I knew when I started into one guide. 🤎

Keep Your Skincare Western™: The Tallow Bible for Beginners is a 48-page, step-by-step digital guide that walks you through the entire tallow-making process — from sourcing raw beef fat to rendering, formulating beautiful skincare, troubleshooting your batches, and even learning the basics of turning your new skill into a small business.

I'm Hailey, founder of Montana Made Tallow. What started with me making small batches of tallow in my parents' kitchen eventually grew into a Montana skincare business, storefront, wholesale accounts, and a product line I truly love.

And I learned a LOT along the way.

This isn't just a collection of recipes. It's the guide I wish someone had handed me when I made my very first batch.

🌾 INSIDE THE GUIDE YOU'LL LEARN:

TALLOW MAKING 101

  • What tallow actually is
  • Beef suet vs. trim fat
  • How to find and source quality beef fat
  • What to ask your butcher or rancher
  • How to properly trim and prepare raw fat
  • Equipment you'll need
  • Workspace setup and sanitation
  • How to keep better batch records

RENDERING — STEP BY STEP

  • How to dry render beef suet
  • Wet vs. dry rendering
  • What your tallow should look like throughout the process
  • Filtering and refining
  • How to reduce that “beefy” smell
  • Cooling and storage
  • How to calculate your rendering yield
  • Common rendering mistakes and how to avoid them

FORMULATING TALLOW SKINCARE

  • Why I formulate by weight instead of cups
  • How percentages work
  • How to scale recipes up or down
  • How tallow behaves in a formulation
  • How to make tallow softer or firmer
  • How beeswax changes a balm
  • How liquid oils affect texture
  • How to make beautifully whipped tallow
  • Why tallow sometimes becomes grainy
  • How temperature affects your finished product

🤎 INGREDIENT GUIDE

You'll also learn what some of my favorite tallow-formulating ingredients actually do in a recipe, including:

  • Beef tallow
  • Squalane oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Olive oil
  • Beeswax
  • Vitamin E
  • Essential oils and fragrance considerations

Squalane is especially useful when you want a lighter, silkier feel in a tallow formula without making the finished product feel excessively heavy. I explain how supporting oils and waxes change the feel of your finished balm so you can start understanding formulation instead of blindly following recipes.

🐄 10 BEGINNER TALLOW RECIPES

You'll get 10 beginner-friendly formulations to start making right away, including:

  • Bare-Bones Unscented Tallow Balm
  • Soft Whipped Tallow
  • Simple Body Balm
  • Basic Lip Balm
  • Cowboy Hand Balm
  • Belly + Body Balm
  • Simple Baby-Style Balm
  • Firm Pocket Balm
  • Cuticle Balm
  • Vanilla-Inspired Tallow Base

Each recipe includes measurements by weight, step-by-step instructions, texture adjustments, packaging suggestions, and tips for making the formula your own.

BUT I DIDN'T STOP AT MAKING TALLOW...

If making your first few jars turns into “Wait...could I actually sell this?” — there's an entire section for that, too.

🌾 FROM YOUR KITCHEN TO YOUR FIRST CUSTOMER

I'm sharing some of the things I've learned while actually building Montana Made Tallow, including:

  • How to calculate your cost per jar
  • Beginner pricing considerations
  • Costs new makers commonly forget
  • Choosing packaging
  • What to think about before creating labels
  • Batch and lot tracking
  • Product photography with your phone
  • How to write a product description
  • Understanding cosmetic vs. medical claims
  • What to research before selling skincare
  • Your First Sale Checklist

📱 BONUS: TALLOW MARKETING MINI-PLAYBOOK

Because making a beautiful product is only half of it.

You'll also get:

  • 20 tallow content ideas
  • 20 scroll-stopping hooks
  • 10 easy Reel formulas
  • 5 content pillars to keep you from constantly posting “buy my product”
  • A simple 7-day product launch plan
  • Sample launch copy
  • Product photography ideas
  • A printable 30-day content planner

And I'm sharing one of the most personal sections in the entire guide:

“What I Wish I Knew Before Starting Montana Made Tallow”

The things I would do differently.

The mistakes that taught me something.

Why I wish I'd started with fewer products.

Why batch records matter.

Why knowing your numbers matters.

Why better pictures matter.

Why your story sells your product better than constantly saying “SHOP NOW.”

And why you don't have to look like a huge skincare company to build something people trust.

PLUS PRINTABLE MAKER WORKSHEETS

🤎 Rendering Log
🤎 Recipe Development Sheet
🤎 Cost-Per-Jar Worksheet
🤎 30-Day Content Planner
🤎 First-Sale Checklist

You don't need fancy equipment. You don't need 20 ingredients. And you definitely don't need to know everything before you start.

You just need a good piece of fat, a little patience, and someone to show you where to begin.

I'll show you the rest. 🤎

    FAQs

Are your products organic / natural?

Our products combine the power of naturally occurring and advanced science ingredients that are simple to use, highly effective, non-toxic, non-irritating, and absolutely cruelty-free. We do not use aggressive, irritating ingredients. Beyond this, we do not like labels such as ‘organic,’ ‘natural’ or ‘clean,’ which have no consistent definition and tell you nothing about a product’s safety or efficacy. We are committed to bringing you the very best ingredient science and being certified “organic” does not always yield the best ingredient.

    Do your products contain fragrance?

Generally not, but with limited exceptions. “Fragrance,” when used in our products like the ANTI-AGING BODY CREAM, is selected for its pleasant scent but also for its proven tolerability. Most fragrances contain allergic substances, or “allergens”: if present, it is compulsory to state this on the label, even if the percentage contained is minimal. Where possible, we tend to use fragrances which do not contain allergens and which should therefore give rise to fewer problems. When fragrance is present in a our product, is indicated in the list of ingredients as PARFUM or FRAGRANCE.

Is there talc in any of your products?

The minerals that are used to produce talc can contain asbestos, which is why there are legitimate concerns about its potential effect on our health. The talc used in our ENZYME CLEANSER, BABY BUM CREAM and tinted CLARIFYING SPOT TREATMENTS is NOT made of minerals that contain asbestos and thus is not carcinogenic and completely safe. The talc we use is periodically and consistently reviewed by independent laboratories.

What is the shelf life of my product?

All beauty products need to be used by a certain period. This is known as the 'period after opening' and can be easily identified by the PAO symbol. The symbol can be recognised as the shape of an opened jar, and will have a number inside; 9M will indicate 9 months, 12M is 12 months, and 36M is 36 months. Once opened the product should be used in this period, as after this time the quality of the product will deteriorate.

    What customers say

“The second product I have bought in the smaller size. Love the little tingle I get on my face after use and a couple of drops is enough.”

    Paige Alexander

“Fantastic cleanser ! My skin is clean & fresh , ready to absorb the rest of my
    Dr. Barbara Sturm skincare routine.”

    Claire Cooper

“This cleanser is very lightweight & doesn’t dry out your skin like most cleansers. I have my teenage son using it & it has helped with his acne.”

    Sara Bond

“I now don't want to use any other cleanser. Use it in the morning and evenings. It doesn't dry the skin and leaves it nicely clean.”
